As part of developing a guide for agricultural advisors, our partner Naturland produced and published three (3) YouTube videos. Each video shows a real example of a climate-smart practice on a Naturland organic certified dairy farm in Germany and Austria. The videos were recorded in July and August 2025.
The aim of the videos is to show practical, hands-on solutions that advisors and farmers can learn from and apply on their own farms. In each video, a farmer presents their farm, explains the practice they use, and shares their experiences and lessons learned. All shown practices are suitable for both organic and conventional dairy and cattle farms.
The following climate-smart practices are featured:
- Agriphotovoltaic on a pasture in southern Germany (Doppelnutzung: So funktioniert Agri-PV auf Weideflächen)
Agriphotovoltaic can be a good way to combine agricultural production with sustainable energy production. The photovoltaic system furthermore provides shade during summer for grazing cattle and can help keep moisture in the soil during dry periods. - Agroforestry sytems on pasture including hedges for feeding (Agroforstsystem als Weide: Nachhaltige Milchviehhaltung für Tierwohl und Klima)
Agroforestry systems can increase resilience towards effects of climate change such as spending shade to animals and soils during hot summers and prevent soil erosion during heavy rain events. Furthermore, it offers an income diversification. - Feed fertilizer cooperation, in which the farmer is using clover grass from arable farmers to feed his cows in return for manure and slurry (Nachhaltige Milchproduktion durch Futter-Mist-Kooperation)
Using clover grass from arable farmers and giving back manure to them enhances humus increase in the arable fields and helps closing nutrient cycles. Clover grass is often cultivated in organic crop rotations due to his nitrogen fixing properties. It also helps regulated weed in organic farming. Using clover grass from crop rotations in arable farming also offers the possibility to use the clover grass for human consumption and to produce dairy products without competing with human nutrition even in regions where permanent grassland is not commonly cultivated.
All videos are available in German with English subtitles.
Thank you to all the farms that provided insights into their operations!
