BEATLES Advisory Webinar: Climate and organic farming – an introduction

On October 29, 2025, Naturland hosted an online webinar as part of the BEATLES project, supported by EUKI. The event brought together 94 participants from a wide range of backgrounds and countries, reflecting strong international interest in the topic.

The webinar explored the interconnections between climate change and agriculture, beginning with a presentation by Dr. Cathleen Frühauf from the German Weather Service (Deutscher Wetterdienst), who outlined how climate change is affecting agricultural systems. This was followed by a contribution from Dr. Jürn Sanders of FiBL – the Research Institute of Organic Agriculture in Switzerland, who examined agriculture’s impact on the climate and highlighted the role organic farming can play in increasing resilience to climate change while also reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

Two Naturland farmers then shared practical experiences from their own experience on how farmers can improve adaptation towards the effects of climate change. One farmer reported about his experiences with dairy cows on pasture in a dry climate and potential coping mechanisms for hot days as well as feed diversification. The other farmer reported about his measures to increase soil carbon content to improve resilience towards droughts and floodings in arable farming.

Overall, the webinar successfully met its objective of introducing the links between organic agriculture and climate change while offering practical inspiration for farmers seeking to improve sustainability on their farms. The content proved particularly valuable for agricultural advisors, who frequently face questions about climate change, its implications for agriculture, and the potential of organic farming to contribute to climate adaptation and mitigation.
